Looking beyond sustainable design, nicholas always strives to create urban environments which contribute positively to the biosphere. This means not simply “keeping things as they are” – which “sustainability” implies – but making a real difference.
We advocate for increased urban density around transport hubs and transport nodes, which is created via “integrated development”.
This includes vertically stacking an imaginative mixed-use programme above transport infrastructure such as rail and light rail.
Developing at intensity creates a symbiosis which strengthens both the built environment and the transportation links which serve them. The symbiosis is social, environmental and economic.
Intense development is generally more walkable because distances are shorter, and the linkages can be protected from the elements.
Let’s intensify and activate our Middle East cities, and increase opportunities for social interaction, and economic and environmental regeneration.
We strongly believe that development should be regenerative – improving outcomes for both the environment and for people.
