Urban Ecosystems

Public amenity space

January 15, 2025

Looking beyond sustainable design, nicholas always strives to create urban environments which contribute positively to the biosphere. This means not simply “keeping things as they are” – which “sustainability” implies – but making a real difference.

We advocate for liveable cities, where planned outdoor amenity space within developments enhances the quality of life. In practice, the residual space between buildings is just as important as the spaces which buildings contain.

Shaded, green amenity space can considerably enhance the quality of life by encouraging spontaneous uses.

Let’s strengthen the civic realm in our Middle East cities by integrating gardens, plazas and “outdoor rooms” – which can form both backdrop and centrepiece to the theatre of the city.

We strongly believe that development should be regenerative – improving outcomes for the environment and for people.
