Mecanoo’s Abu Dhabi Museum

February 22, 2026

There are places that don’t pretend to be modern. They simply look as if they’ve always been there. Mecanoo’s Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi blends into the desert landscape like a rocky massif, and its pentagonal geometry evokes cellular structures - the kinds of patterns we recognise from nature. Water, vegetation and hanging gardens form part of a story about survival in a harsh climate.

Inside, 35,000 m² of knowledge awaits, embedded in matter. The skeleton of “Stan” the T.rex and the Murchison meteorite hit harder than any screen, because they are proof that Earth’s history is physical and unforgiving.

Architecture can teach humility, a museum can be an experience, and science can speak the language of emotion. What remains is the thought that the future begins with how we understand the past.
