Burnham Westgate Hall in north Norfolk is a seminal work in the Palladian style which launched Sir John Soane’s career. Nicholas admires the Regency period for its rigour and clarity of expression in the arts and literature. To him it represents Great Britain’s cultural zenith. The continued popularity of its architecture suggests that we continue to bask in its warm afterglow.
