Design Matters

3D Printed Buildings

March 14, 2026

3D printing technology is increasingly making its way into construction, transforming not only the pace of delivery but also the very way we think about architecture.

The example of Earth Forest Campus in Spain, described by Natural Building Australia, demonstrates that 3D printing is evolving into a mature, construction-ready system. Additive manufacturing halves project timelines, leaves a lower carbon footprint, reduces material consumption and offers a freedom of form that traditional methods cannot provide. Digital control of the process ensures precision and repeatability but also embeds design responsibility.

In a broader context, this marks a return to building as a craft: expressive, self-aware and bold, as evidenced through this new tool.
