Planned Communities – 10: Family at the Heart of Every Community

May 27, 2026

For centuries, the souk shaped how Gulf cities were organised. Narrow passages, shaded arcades, the overlap of commerce and conversation. Then came wide roads, gated compounds, and hermetically sealed interiors. The fabric became distorted.

As conceptualised by nicholas, these contemporary Gulf neighbourhoods are designed around walkability, connectivity and daily life. Drawing inspiration from the spatial qualities of the traditional souk, the master planning reinterprets familiar urban patterns for a new generation — creating communities where homes, streets, retail and public life are closely integrated.

Generous covered balconies provide shaded outdoor living spaces which are semi-enclosed, climatically responsive and visually connected to the street below. Walkable streets activated by cafés, local retail and everyday amenities encourage movement on foot while supporting a vibrant and engaging public realm throughout the day and evening.

The result is a contemporary interpretation of the souk for the 21st century: social, connected and grounded in the culture and climate of the Arabian Gulf.

Communities built around proximity and pedestrian life consistently forge stronger social bonds than those shaped by vehicle dependence. When architecture remembers what our cities once were, it earns the authority to reimagine what they might become.
