Press Release

“Delivering Sustainable Development – It All Starts with Design,” FutureScape Global, Riyadh, Tuesday 9 June, 4:00pm–4:45pm

May 31, 2026

I’m looking forward to participating in FutureScape Global in Riyadh on 8–9 June, where nicholas will be exhibiting and showcasing a selection of our projects from across the region.

I will be joining an excellent panel discussion, “Delivering Sustainable Development – It All Starts with Design,” taking place in the FutureScape Global Theatre on Tuesday 9 June, 4:00pm–4:45pm.

Together with fellow panellists Reham Bataineh (Parsons), Andre van Heerden (Cape Reed), Laila Alawneh (NEOM) and Michael Holm (insite), we will discuss the role of design in shaping sustainable development, the integration of landscape and public realm into successful projects, and lessons that can be drawn from developments across Saudi Arabia and the wider Gulf region.

These themes are closely aligned with our work at nicholas, where we continue to explore how architecture, urbanism and public realm design can create more connected, walkable and climate-responsive places. From master plans and mixed-use developments to civic and commercial projects, our focus remains on creating environments that contribute positively to the life of the city and the communities they serve.

For me, the conversation begins with a simple principle: successful places are designed around people. Public realm, walkability, comfort, culture and climate are not secondary considerations — they are the foundations of successful development.

Too often, cities import solutions that were developed for entirely different social, cultural and environmental conditions. The result can be architecture and urban environments that look impressive but fail to perform as places for people. Why would we adopt approaches we already know are unlikely to work?

I believe the most successful projects emerge from a deep understanding of local culture, climate and patterns of daily life. People-centred, culturally intelligent design creates places that are more resilient, more valuable and ultimately more loved.

Saudi Arabia is redefining the scale and ambition of development in the region, making this an important moment to discuss how thoughtful design can help shape the next generation of urban habitats.

I am particularly interested to hear the perspectives of my fellow panellists and to continue the discussion at the nicholas stand, F43. If you are attending FutureScape Global, I would be delighted to exchange ideas on how thoughtful design can shape better places for the communities they serve.
