Education – 1

January 27, 2026

Contemporary education design tends to be generic and often focuses on effect rather than meaning. Schools, however, are cultural institutions - which should reflect the culture and intent of both the institution and the community it serves.

We recommend a degree of formality to bring structure to the school – and suggest colonnades and quadrangles reinvented for the twenty-first century.

Its form should arise from values and responsibility. A return to order, rhythm and clear structure is not a step backwards, but rather restores dignity. Classical elements such as courtyards, colonnades and transitional zones still possess strength when translated into contemporary language.

In this way, schools can be situated in the present but grounded in the past, and having an eye to the future.

We always design climatically and so in a Middle east context would shade the façade using deep external covered walkways, creating an intermediate zone between inside and out.

Climate-responsive design, with a conscious use of light, shadow and environmental exposure, builds not merely comfort, but character. A good school teaches even before the lessons begin.
